My Life in Dominica
My Life in Dominica
A (mostly) picture diary.
A (mostly) picture diary.
These pages will hopefully show you a little of what my daily life is like in Dominica.  I can't promise regular
updates, but I will update as often as possible.  Early on there will be pictures of fun, but later there will be many
more pictures of business.  I am here to study, but I am going to try to squeeze a little fun in in the mean time.

4/29/12 - Emerald Pool Tour and other notes
If you are ever lucky enough to visit
this country, make sure to stop by the
#1 View Point & Souvenir Shop.
We stopped by one of the last remaining Carib settlement in the Caribbean.  Of course the view is amazing!

4/30/12 - An average day at the beach
Just off campus on the beach is this cool little bar and grill.
There is a broken down pier in the front that leads out into
the ocean.  Of course, there are lots of crabs running
around.  They are super fast but that just makes it more of a
challenge to catch one.
Most of the freshwater streams in Dominica are heavily
populated with this shellfish. It looks like a crawdad or shrimp
of some sort. There are also many small fish darting around.
This is the stream that leads water away from the Emerald Pool.
As you walk the path you actually cross this path before you
reach the Pool.
Emerald Pool is fed by a large waterfall. The Pool itself is not
very large but it is just deep enough to be able to jump into
from some of the surrounding rocks.
This is a short video that shows some of the walk down the
path to the Emerald Pool in Dominica. This path takes you
deep into the rainforest to where the Pool is located.

Studying on the "Seaside Deck" with
this view...yes please!
5/2/12 - A miscellaneous update, pics from my phones
Sometimes the view
from my front door
includes a giant
rainbow!
The local aquatic life is
certainly not as happy
about meeting me as I
am about meeting it!
(I have lots of pictures today so thumbnails will be smaller.  You can still click for full size.)
When you look
skyward and
see this, how
can you not
smile ear to
ear?
I am not the
only one
enjoying the
sun.  Many
large iguanas
share this
island with us.
This poor spiney pufferfish had passed
into the great beyond.  He was about
the size of a regulation football!  I was
with some locals and they insisted on a
proper burial.  So we dug a hole and
laid him to rest.  Complete with
makeshift grave marker made from
fallen sticks.
The school hosted a BBQ for us.  We
had a nice spread that included "beef"
hamburgers.  This is not the Midwest,
folks.  A steel drum band played all
night.

Who doesn't like peanut butter?  But at
these prices who can afford it?!?!

5/4/12 - A day of snorkeling and the Dominica sunset
I found a starfish
cruising the bottom, he
clearly wasn't thrilled to
be interrupted.
Sea urchins the
size of basketballs!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The sun setting from the roof
of my apartment, then I look
down to the road and see
cars swerving to miss cows.
The moon coming up over
the mountain is almost as
beautiful as the sun saying
goodnight.

5/5/12 - Snorkeling the barge reef
